Transfer drama at Etihad is becoming more intriguing with the situation of key players’ contracts. Two pillars of the team, Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan, will be ending their contracts this season and thus will be released for free.
Three senior players, Bernardo Silva, John Stones, and Ederson, are also in a critical position with 18 months remaining on their contracts. Given their age, which is over 30 years, contract extensions seem unrealistic.
On the other hand, Mateo Kovacic and Jack Grealish are still tied to the club until 2027. Grealish’s fate is a particular highlight. Since his move from Aston Villa in 2021, this English winger has not been able to meet expectations. With just one assist in 15 Premier League appearances this season, speculation about his return to Villa Park has only strengthened.
Not only Villa are interested, but several other Premier League clubs are reportedly ready to accommodate Grealish, adding complexity to Manchester City’s squad overhaul in the upcoming summer transfer window.
